What Coaching Is ... For the last ten years, I have been coaching others in both a corporate and independent environment. The job of a Coach is a unique one for which experience seems to be the best teacher. While there is training available, the authority to bless this training, and the trained, is still being jockeyed for. I'm all for credentialing - I'm on that path myself - but the process is still a bit confusing. Don't let any of this stop you from seeking the benefits of Coaching. Most of my training occurred while still in the corporate environment. It was nice having 'rich parents' to bring me along and allow me to choose the type of leadership training that I felt most supported my strengths and direction. Much of this training was in the area of facilitation, which uses many of the powerful concepts of Coaching. This training, and my own discipline of study, helped bring me along as a Manager Coach and then as a Leader Coach. In all this, it is clear to me that the Coach is above all a Listener. The hardest thing she/he has to learn is truly to listen, not passively but creatively and responsively. To me this is Coaching; Listening ... and helping you in the matter of finding the right solutions right there inside you. This is how it happened for me .. and continues to happen for me. Through listening, the Coach is an interesting partner: another aspect of oneself, sharing with you what is most precious and most private - your own inner self. He is something of a guru, from whom you hope to learn your secret mantra. He is a strong shoulder and a sounding board for your Leadership Desire and Intent. |
